Built from a brief
Custom Cakes
A personalised cake starts with a celebration rather than a catalogue. Tell a maker what you are marking, how many people are in the room and the look you are drawn to, and the design follows from there.

The starting point
What makes a cake custom
It is not the decoration. It is that every decision is made for your celebration instead of being chosen from a fixed range.
- The size comes from your guest count. Not from a standard list. A maker works backwards from servings to tin sizes, then shapes the design to fit.
- The flavour is yours to choose.Sponge, filling and any dietary requirements are decided with you, which is the part a shelf cake cannot offer.
- The design answers the occasion.A fortieth in a restaurant and a christening at home are different rooms, and a custom cake is built for the room it will sit in.
- Nothing is priced in advance.A custom cake is quoted from servings, tiers, finish, handwork and delivery. Two cakes of the same size can quote very differently.

Where people start
The briefs that come up again and again
Custom does not mean complicated. These are the requests Australian makers see most, and any of them is a fine place to begin.

A number that matters
Thirty, fifty, sixty. A single tier built around one strong idea and not a crowded design.
A colour to match
A palette pulled from the room, the outfit or the invitation, with the cake finished to sit inside it.
A reference image
Two or three photographs and a sentence about what you like in each. The most useful brief there is.
Something sculptural
A shape rather than a round tier. Needs internal support and an experienced hand, and it changes the delivery plan.
A flavour you love
Occasionally the flavour is the brief and the look follows. Say so, because it changes what a maker suggests.
A dietary requirement
Dairy free, vegan or gluten free, made properly and not as an afterthought. Raise it in the brief.
Cost and coverage
The three questions people search for
There is no single figure, and any site offering one is guessing. A custom cake is quoted from the number of servings, the number of tiers, the covering, how many hours of handwork the design needs, whether there are sugar florals, and whether the maker delivers and assembles it. Two cakes that both feed forty can sit a long way apart because one is smooth buttercream and the other is two days of sugar work. The fastest way to a real number is to send your servings, date, style direction and budget band once and compare what comes back. Moments Worth Cake does not set or take payment for any of it.
Search by the celebration rather than the suburb. Most Australian custom cake work comes from studios and registered home kitchens that deliver within a radius ahead of from a shopfront, so a maker two suburbs away may well cover you and a maker in your own street may not. Give your suburb or postcode in the brief and let the makers who service it come to you.
Any cake made to your specification rather than chosen from a range. That can be as simple as a name and a colour on an otherwise standard design, or as involved as a sculpted cake built from a reference. The word describes the process, not the price, which is why a personalised cake is not automatically an expensive one.

Practical detail
Notice, tastings and open briefs
How far ahead should I order a custom cake?
Two to four weeks suits most celebration cakes. Allow four or more once a theme, modelled figures or printed elements are involved, and six to twelve months for a wedding. The constraint is nearly always the maker's calendar instead of the build itself, so a close date is worth asking about.
Can I taste the cake before I commit?
For weddings, often. For a birthday cake, rarely, and it is not usually necessary. Some makers charge for a tasting and credit it against the booking, some post a sample box and some do not offer one at all. Ask before you build it into your plans.
What if I do not know what I want?
Say that in the brief. Give the occasion, the date, the suburb, the guest count and one sentence about the room, and ask for a suggestion. Experienced makers are used to open briefs and will often propose something better than a fixed request would have produced.
