Colour, character and candles
Kids Birthday Cakes
A children's cake has to do two jobs at once: look exactly like the thing they asked for, and survive a room full of excited kids. Theme, colour and timing all matter more here than on any other cake.

What to tell the maker
Briefing a kids cake
A children's birthday cake brief goes wrong in predictable ways, and every one of them is avoidable before you enquire. Most kids cake ideas survive contact with a real party once the four things below are settled.
- Name the theme precisely. Not just the character but the version: the colour of the outfit, the show, the year. Getting it nearly right is worse than choosing something else.
- Say the age.It changes the whole cake. A first birthday is soft and photographed; a seventh is loud and eaten. Makers plan differently for each.
- Count adults as well as children.Children eat far less cake than the guest list suggests, and the parents are usually the ones going back for a second slice.
- Say what time it is being cut.An afternoon party in an unairconditioned room is the quickest way for a themed cake to arrive looking tired.

Where to start
Where most kids cake briefs start
Themed work needs lead time for toppers, printed elements and modelled figures. Choosing the direction early is what makes the rest easy.

First birthday cakes
A 1st birthday cake is soft in palette, single tier and the most photographed cake of the year. Often paired with a small smash cake.
Character cakes
A character birthday cake rendered in fondant, printing or modelling. Name the exact version when you brief it.
Princess and fairytale cakes
A princess birthday cake in tiers and pastels with a topper. The request that most benefits from a reference image.
Unicorn and rainbow cakes
A unicorn birthday cake is bright inside and out. Ask about the inside as well, because the cut is half the moment.

Toddler birthday cakes
Simple shapes, gentler colour and fewer inedible decorations. Practicality matters more than spectacle.

Number cakes for kids
The age as the cake. Clean, easy to photograph and easy for a room of children to understand.
First birthdays and themes
What parents ask most
Small, soft and easy to photograph. Most first birthday cakes are a single tier in a gentle palette with one candle, often accompanied by a separate smash cake for the child so the main cake survives for the room. Ask the maker about decorations that are not edible, since anything a one year old can pull off is worth knowing about, and mention any dairy or egg requirements early.
A small plain cake made for the birthday child to demolish while somebody photographs it. Most are around 10 cm (4 in), lightly sweetened, and ordered alongside the main cake instead of replacing it. Say so in the brief if you want one, because it changes the quote and most makers treat it as a small add on.
Many will make a cake in the spirit of a character using colour, shapes and edible printing, and plenty will decline an exact replica of a licensed figure. That is a commercial decision on their part rather than a lack of skill. Send the reference, say what your child loves about it, and let the maker propose their version.

Practical detail
Servings, notice and dietary needs
How much cake do I need for a kids party?
Count the adults as full servings and the children as roughly half, then work from dessert portions. Fifteen children with a parent each comes out around twenty three servings, which is a 25 cm (10 in) round ahead of a 20 cm (8 in). If the design you want is smaller than that, a plain slab cut in the kitchen is the cheap and standard fix. The serving guide has the full table.
How far ahead should I book a themed cake?
Two weeks for a simple cake, four or more once a theme is involved. Toppers, printed panels and modelled figures all have to be made ahead and cannot be rushed. Some makers set a minimum lead time for themed work, so ask when you enquire. School holiday weekends fill earliest.
Are there dairy free or nut free options for kids cakes?
Dairy free and egg free cakes are routine. Nut free needs a different conversation, because a small kitchen that handles nuts at all cannot always guarantee a nut free cake however carefully it bakes. Say in the brief whether it is a preference or a diagnosed allergy and name the allergen. For a severe allergy, ask the maker directly whether their kitchen can exclude it and accept a straight no as a good answer: a separate small cake from the same kitchen does not remove the risk.
