Wedding cakes, from the first tasting to the final slice
A wedding cake is quoted, not bought. Understand what actually moves the number, work out your servings, then send one brief to wedding cake makers who take your date and your style.
- Australia wide
- One brief, several responses
- No obligation to book

Decide how many servings you need, decide how tall you want the cake to look, then choose a finish. Those three answers, plus your date, venue and budget band, are enough for a wedding cake maker to quote you properly. There is no single wedding cake cost in Australia, because the number follows the work rather than the size. Everything below explains why each one matters.
What changes the quote
Six things that move a wedding cake price
Two cakes of the same height can be quoted very differently. These are the variables doing the work.
Servings
The guest count sets the cake before anything else does. A cutting cake plus a kitchen cake often costs less than one very large tiered cake serving the same room.
Tiers and structure
Height is structural work. A two tier wedding cake needs internal supports and stronger recipes, and anything above that is assembled on site. A dummy tier gains height without paying for cake nobody eats.
Finish and technique
Smooth ganache, textured buttercream, fondant, hand painting and sugar flowers are very different amounts of skilled time on the same size cake.
Florals
Fresh florals need food safe preparation and are usually placed on the day. Sugar flowers are made by hand in advance and priced accordingly.
Delivery and setup
Distance, timing, venue access and stacking on site all sit inside the quote. A cake assembled at the venue is a different job to one collected in a box.
Date and season
Peak Saturdays book out first, and warm weather changes what a maker will recommend for covering and transport.
Servings before tiers
Work out the cake before you fall in love with a photo
Almost every wedding cake conversation goes wrong in the same place: a couple picks a shape they have seen, then discovers it feeds forty people at a wedding of one hundred and twenty.
Portion size is the reason. Wedding portions are traditionally cut smaller than party portions, so the same cake can be described as serving very different numbers depending on who is cutting it. Ask any maker how they portion, and get the serving number in writing.
If the cake you want does not feed the room, two solutions are normal and neither is a compromise: add a plain kitchen cake cut in the back, or add a dummy tier for height and serve the rest from the real ones.
Style direction
Six ways to describe the cake you want
You do not need the technical vocabulary. Pointing at a direction is enough for a maker to interpret it in their own hand ahead of copying somebody else's cake.
Classic Elegant
Clean tiers, restrained detail and a finish that photographs the same in ten years.
Romantic Floral
A floral wedding cake with fresh or sugar blooms moving across the tiers.

Modern Minimal
Sharp edges, soft texture and one intentional detail carrying the whole cake.
Sculptural
Artful shapes, height and statement design that reads as a centrepiece.
Vintage Piped
Retro piping, ruffles, bows and cherries with real personality.
Colour-Led
A palette that ties the cake to the styling of the whole day.
Before you send the brief
What your wedding cake maker needs to know
- Date and venue.Including access times and whether the reception is outdoors.
- Guest count and serving expectation.Cutting cake only, or cake for the whole room.
- Style direction and colours. Two or three references, with a note on what you like in each.
- Flavours and dietary needs.Raised now, not after the tasting.
- Florals.Whether your florist is supplying blooms or the cake maker is.
- Budget band.A range, so the strongest version of your cake can be proposed at that level.
Send that once and you are ready to order a wedding cake with responses you can actually compare, rather than five quotes built on five different assumptions.

Common questions
Wedding cake questions, answered
How far in advance should I order a wedding cake?
Most couples approach wedding cake makers between six and twelve months before the date, and many makers take only one or two cakes per weekend. Popular Saturdays in spring and autumn go first. If your date is inside three months, it is still worth asking: midweek dates and smaller cakes are often achievable. The booking timeline guide sets this out alongside other cake types.
How many tiers do I need for my guest count?
Tiers are a design decision, servings are a maths decision, and the two do not always match. A three tier cake can serve anywhere from roughly fifty to well over a hundred depending on tin sizes and how it is portioned. Work out servings first with the cake size and serving guide, then decide how tall you want it to look.
How much cake do I need for 100 guests?
A three tier cake built from 20 cm, 25 cm and 30 cm tiers reaches roughly 105 to 120 wedding portions, which covers 100 guests with a margin. A two tier cake will not, whatever the photograph suggests. If you want the look of a smaller cake, keep a two tier cutting cake for the photos and add a plain kitchen cake cut in the back. The cake size and serving guide has the full table by tin size.
How much does a wedding cake for 100 people cost?
There is no honest single figure, and any site that gives you one is guessing. An Australian wedding cake is quoted from the servings, the number of tiers, the covering, the amount of handwork, whether there are sugar florals, and whether the maker is delivering and assembling on site. Two cakes that both serve 100 can sit a long way apart on price because one is smooth buttercream and the other is three days of sugar flowers. The fastest way to a real number is to send your date, guest count, style direction and budget band once, and compare what comes back. Moments Worth Cake does not set or take payment for any of it.
Do wedding cake tastings cost anything?
It varies by maker. Some include a tasting once a date is held, some charge a fee that is credited against the booking, and some post a tasting box instead of meeting in person. Ask what the tasting includes, whether it is redeemable and how many flavours you can compare before you commit to a date.
What is a naked wedding cake?
A naked cake is finished with little or no covering on the outside, so the sponge layers and filling stay visible. A semi naked cake has a thin scraped coating instead. Both suit relaxed and outdoor weddings, though they are less forgiving in heat and are usually finished closer to the ceremony than a fully covered cake.
Can we have a cake that is not traditional wedding cake?
Yes. Cutting cakes with a dessert table, single tier cakes with a larger kitchen cake, individual desserts and shared plated options are all common. If you are leaning that way, look at dessert tables as well and mention it in your brief so the responses you get are actually comparable.
Who sets the cake up at the venue?
Usually the cake maker, or a courier they trust. Confirm who is delivering, what time the venue allows access, whether the cake needs refrigeration on arrival, who supplies the stand and who is responsible if the stand goes home with the wrong person.
